Bowing to the long-pending demand of commuters, Railways have decided to run the Rajya Rani Express to Nilambur Road as an independent train from May 9 onwards.
But, the new express train will operate from Kochuveli terminal instead of Thiruvananthapuram Central. At present, the Rajya Rani Express is being attached to the rake of the Thiruvananthapuram Central-Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram Central Amritha Expresses that operate via Palakkad junction.
Railway sources said, Rajya Rani Express as an independent train, had been approved by the Railway Board and the circular to this effect had been issued by the

Southern Railway.
The passengers associations and commuters had been seeking a direct train from Nilambur Road to the State capital. The commuters, especially those from Malappuram, would be benefited most by Rajya Rani Express turning an independent train.
The 16349 Kochuveli-Nilambur Road Rajya Rani Express and the 16350 Nilambur Road-Kochuveli Rajya Rani Express would operate via the Amritha Link line and would not touch Shoranur junction from May 9, the officials said. The Rajya Rani Express would have one 2 Tier AC, one 3 Tier AC, 7 Sleeper Class, 2 Unreserved, 1 Differently abled and one Luggage-cum-Break van coaches.
Train 16349 would depart from Kochuveli terminal at 8.50 p.m. to reach Nilambur Road 7.50 a.m. Train 16350 would depart from Nilambur road at 8.50 p.m. to reach Kochuveli terminal at 6 a.m.
The 16343/1344 Thiruvananthapuram Central-Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram Central Amritha Expresses had been given additional stoppage at Kollencode from May 9. The stoppage was in view of the Rajya Rani Expess skipping Shoranur junction, according to Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Palakkad.

New Delhi: Eleven railway stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) will be upgraded to airport-like standard soon. The 11 stations include five in Assam. The upgradation is part of the Indian Railway's Rs 1 lakh crore station redevelopment programme, PTI reported citing a senior official.
NFR Chief Public Relations Officer P J Sharma told the news agency that the stations selected for the upgrade include Guwahati, Kamakhya, Lumding, New Tinsukia and Dibrugarh, Katihar, Purnea, Kishanganj, Barsoi, Dimapur and Agartala. It may be noted that the Railways has already prepared a blueprint for about 204 stations which will be upgraded. Railway minister Piyush Goyal has directed the Railways to improve illumination levels at the selected railway stations and upgrade them up to

airport-like standards.
According to the agency report, illumination Lux levels will be raised to 160 in concourse area, 115 in circulating area, 150 in waiting hall, 100 in open platform areas, 200 in covered platform areas, 150 in enquiry-cum-reservation office counter, 150 in foot overbridge/sub-way areas, escalators, near lifts and stairs, besides 50 in outdoor parking areas. Sharma further said that this upgrade will reduce energy consumption to a great extent.
Indian Railways is working to upgrade railway station in order to provide airport-like facility to passengers. Recently, the whole New Delhi railway station was revamped with ultra-modern facilities to ensure that passengers enjoy airport-like facilities at railway stations as well. Apart from this, Railways is also planning to upgrade security check at stations. There are plans to introduce airport-like security at stations which means that stations will be sealed 20 minutes prior to scheduled train departure.
Several railway stations have been renovated recently with modern public toilet, 5-star lounge, lifts, escalators, water vending machines and other facilities. Railways is working towards modernisation of trains as well as railway stations for passengers' comfort. Piyush Goyal also recently asked the Railway Board to work towards providing free Wi-Fi facility at about 2,000 stations, as soon as possible.
