BENGALURU: South Western Railway's move to suspend two DEMU trains, which ply between Banaswadi and Hosur, for five months beginning Saturday has not gone down well with suburban train users. SWR officials on Wednesday announced the two trains - 06571/06572 Banaswadi-Hosur-Banaswadi and 06573/06574 Banaswadi- Hosur-Banaswadi - stand cancelled from May 26 to October 25.While SWR cited track renewal work between Baiyyappanahalli and Hosur (48km) as the reason for the cancellation, regular passengers say the timing of the announcement - immediately after the assembly elections - is suspect. "The existing single rail track between Byappanahalli and Hosur is old and must be replaced," said E Vijaya," chief public relations officer (SWR). Trains a hit among techies More than 5,000 passengers travel in the Salem section (Hebbal-Banaswadi-Hosur) every day. The two trains - introduced in March this year just before the elections - were quickly gaining in popularity since the trains...

halted at Byappanahalli in the tech corridor. Many techies working in Bellandur, Electronics City and Sarjapur Road were regular passengers as it was a cheaper and faster mode of transport compared to the road commute. Experts say suspending train services for five months for track renewal is rare. They say a track relaying train (TRT) can lay up to 650 metres of new track a day compared to 120 metres manually. The work could be completed in eight weeks if the authorities take up 650 metres per day, they say."Five months is too long a time," said Sanjeev Dyamannavar, a rail activist. "These services were getting popular and there was demand to extend these trains to Yeshwantpur and Hebbal. But now the trains itself have been cancelled. SWR appears to be cancelling these services citing technical reasons since elections are over. SWR should operate these two rakes on other stretches till the completion of maintenance work between Baiyyappanahalli and Hosur." Track maintenance cited However, Vijaya defended the move, saying, "If 2-3 km track is replaced, other trains will have to ply slowly on that full stretch and punctuality will be affected. We have to undertake maintenance work which is critical to safety while maintaining reasonable punctuality of running trains." But activists say there are other options instead of cancelling trains. In Chennai for example, maintenance work is executed during weekends. Suburban train services are cancelled during the day to facilitate work.

Rail officials conduct survey to understand women commuters’ concerns and requirements, promise measures to improve safety.A large number of women commuters on Western Railway (WR) want ladies-only train services at night and round-the-clock security on all locals, a survey to determine safety concerns revealed.Currently, eight such services are run on the network — four during morning peak hours and four during the evening rush. But there are no special trains for women at night and the reserved coaches are converted into general ones during late hours.Thirty-seven lakh people commute by WR trains every day. Of these, 7.5 lakh are women. In the past year, there has been growing focus on making trains and stations safer and convenient for women. On May 5, WR’s commercial department conducted a survey to understand women’s travel concerns and requirements. The day marked a special occasion: 26 years ago, on May 5, 1992, the first suburban train...

service for only women was operated between Churchgate and Borivali. The service was extended up to Virar in 1993.Thirty-seven per cent of the women interviewed for the survey said ladies-only services should be introduced at night. About 19 per cent of the respondents demanded deployment of RPF personnel in women’s coaches throughout the day.Fifteen per cent of the respondents requested WR to stop creating sections for commuters from other categories in ladies’ compartments. The entire compartment should be declared as a travelling space for only women.WR’s divisional railway manager, Sanjay Mishra, said rail planners would try to implement some of the demands. “There have been several calls for ladies-only services at night. We will conduct a feasibility study and take all possible measures to improve the travelling experience and safety of women commuters,” he said. “We can definitely work on a plan to increase the number of security personnel in women’s coaches.”Those who answered the survey also complained about the menace of hawkers and sought better ticket checking in first-class compartments. “The RPF will step up its drives against illegal hawkers,” Mishra said.WR’s divisional commercial manager, Aarti Singh, said authorities were working with NGOs to identify unsafe and unpatrolled areas on the Western Line. “These places will be monitored. We are also looking at developing an app which will help staff members on patrolling duty to log details about such spots,” Singh said.

Regulars on Mumbai-Nashik train slam new design, say made without keeping commuters in mind; call 5-hr journey 'hell'
"We don't want the new train, give us the old one back." This is what Nashik-Mumbai commuters, who got a Panchavati Express, as per their demands, on May 8 have said, adding that the new train has made their five-hour journey "hell". In a letter to Central Railway 10 days after the new coaches arrived, angry passengers have written that the seats are small and uncomfortable, windows are not in sync with seats, passageway is narrow, and the train is stuffy. The letter, a copy of which is with mid-day, states that the width of the new rake is much less than the

old one, making the passage between two rows extremely narrow.
No hits, many misses
It adds that the new push-back seats appear comfortable at first sight, but if the person sitting at the window seat needs to get out, those sitting next to him also have to get up to make room. "There is absolute no legroom, and it is very painful to sit there. The old train had 108 seats in a coach, but the new one has only 102 because of the pantry space. Windows are the worst part. The old train had windows that opened upwards; the new one has windows that open lengthwise. We can't open any window fully and enjoy the breeze," said Amol P Nikam, a regular passenger.
The letter states that the fans are positioned in such a way that there's hardly any air circulation, with most of the air directed at the luggage racks. It adds that the doors to a coach have been reduced to four from six. "We cannot understand the new design. It has been made without keeping passengers in mind, only aesthetics, no comfort," Fokane said. It was passenger activism that led to Panchavati Express getting new coaches — after late passenger activist Bipin Gandhi's persistent demands since December 2017, the railway ministry yielded and gave a new train. Gandhi died of a cardiac arrest on the day of the launch. "Gandhi's demands were sincere; it is the railways that has goofed up in the design," said Nikam.
CR explains design
CR's Senior Public Relations Officer Anil Jain said feedback from passengers was important, and the Central Railway would forward it to the coach manufacturing unit for consideration and review. Giving a detailed analysis, Jain said the windows are as per the standard design of non-AC LHB class coaches. "The horizontally sliding window panes avert accidental injury due to incorrectly locked vertical shutters and also provide sufficient airflow," he explained. He added that the seats were reduced to provide a special pantry cabin, so that hygienic food could be provided, and that there had been improvements in the legroom and the seats were designed ergonomically.

true statement ,railways coach division do not have any vision they do not design the coach with passenger convenience ,most of the seats are not meeting the minimum required length and breadth ,no leg room, seats should have ergonomic design ,newly constructed sitting coaches are poor in design
