Aug 16 (08:05)   Dread on arrival

Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, the busiest railway station in the city, has turned into a perfect example of official neglect, BM has found out. Foul smell, pothole-ridden roads and unauthorised auto-rickshaws that create traffic bottlenecks, continue to greet passengers as they step out of the station.Commuters said the Gubbi Thotadappa Road, the stretch in front of the railway station, has been in a dilapidated condition for months now. The pothole-ridden stretch of over half-a-kilometre surely does not paint an impressive picture of the city to visitors arriving at the station.“This is the first road that an outsider coming to the city via rail encounters upon arrival. Unfortunately, the road that facilitates entry to Bengaluru city is left in a manner that gives a negative impression about the city for thousands of people who arrive here daily,” said a commuter at the station. The entrance to the station from the stretch is...

always chaotic, according to commuters. They blamed it on the haphazard parking by the auto-rickshaws and taxis. “This was the situation every time I visited the station. It only exposes the station authority’s failure. They have not been able to control the parking menace even when it has been there for months,” said Ramesh, another commuter. .Despite regular complaints and instructions issued by the authorities regarding auto-rickshaws parking at the entrance of the station, the situation continues to trouble commuters as they find it difficult to enter the station amidst the chaos. Some passengers BM spoke to said it also results in people reaching the station late and running the risk of missing their trains on account of avoidable obstructions and slow movement of traffic.“Every time I have visited the station, I have to manoeuvre a bottleneck thanks to autos and cabs just outside the station. Many times, while I am already late to catch a train, this has put me in a terrible situation. While there is always a traffic police vehicle standing guard and a traffic official asking the auto drivers to vacate the place, none of them pay heed to such instructions,” said Ravi Taneja, a regular at the station. .Residents complained of an open urination spot just outside the station along the Gubbi Thotadappa Road. This is despite the facility of a clean and well-maintained public toilet on the other side of the double road. There are public toilets both inside and outside the station; but open urination continues. Authorities should put up a ‘no urination’ board…— Geetha, commuter “The spot leaves an odour in the vicinity and poses a health hazard. While there are public toilets both inside and outside the station, open urination continues. The authorities should at least put up a ‘no urination’ board near the spot,” said Geetha, a frequent commuter.“Both BBMP and traffic police should act quickly and effectively to provide a model road and footpath along this 600-metre stretch which experiences heavy traffic flow regularly,” added Geetha.

Getting out of City station and catching road transport-- bus or auto or taxi is a task.
In Secunderabad, Chennai Mumbai and to some extent NDLS, you have easy access to road. In SBC, it is nightmare. Go through nasty road, use subway and get on to walkway and then get down in BMTC bus stand..... impossible task.
Why can't Railways and BMTC coordinate with each other and start bus services to major locations? Say KSR to Jayanagar 4th block, Banashankari, Ulsoor, RK Ashrama, Yelahanka NES, YPR

What are the facilities available for passengers at the Bengaluru Railway Terminal?
The first AC Bengaluru railway station has been equipped with all modern facilities. You will feel like an airport at this railway station. About Rs 314 crore has been spent to build a 4200 square meter centralized AC terminal. The terminal has seven platforms, three enable lines and three pit lines. All the platforms are linked by two subways apart from a long, oval foot over the bridge. Not only this, parking space for 200 cars and 900 two-wheelers has been prepared in the terminal.  The terminal has a real-time passenger information system, a VIP lounge and a food court.
The inauguration of Sir M Visvesvaraya Railway Terminal was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Bengaluru Railway station had been prepared since 2020, but due to Covid-19 and lack of connecting roads, the opening was delayed. On 6 June, the Karnataka Government gave access to the general public. The terminal and other railway infrastructure projects were launched by PM Modi during his two-day tour to the state.

Similarly Mangalore Bangalore sector, gold mine for bus operators. Two daily Trains can be run in this sector.

Aug 08 (18:11)   Century-old railway route to reveal forgotten cultures, empower locals

The narrow gauge Bengaluru-Chikkaballapur light railway line that opened under the Mysore State Railway in 1915 was primarily used to transport goods
The South Western Railway’s (SWR) ambitious restoration project along the 107-year-old rail line connecting Bengaluru and Chikkaballapur may shine a light on stories and cultures on the margins of colonial history.
The Bengaluru division of SWR had firmed up plans for the sprucing up of four stations on the line — Doddajala, Avathihalli, Devanahalli and Nandi Halt — in February last year.
The
...

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is restoring and renovating the stations with CSR funding.
With work on the Doddajala station completed and restoration in Avathihalli and Devanahalli expected to be done in two months, authorities are now inviting citizens to contribute with exhibits for an upcoming museum.
SWR officials said the region was a natural choice for the project since the railway line is by itself a part of heritage. “We also want to convert these spaces into hubs of activity. Through museums and galleries, we will be presenting the story of the Indian Railways to a new audience,” Kusuma Hariprasad, additional divisional railway manager, told DH.
The narrow gauge Bengaluru-Chikkaballapur light railway line that opened under the Mysore State Railway in 1915 was primarily used to transport goods. It was converted into a broad-gauge line in the late 1990s.
The SWR took over the route from the Southern Railway in 2003. At present, three pairs of trains operate on the line, in addition to six pairs of MEMU trains with stops at the Kempegowda International Airport halt station.
INTACH has roped in Mineral Enterprises Ltd as CSR donors for work on the Doddajala, Avathihalli and Devanahalli stations, at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore.
In the second phase, SWR targets footfalls through rail coach restaurants and entertainment zones. It could also have train coaches converted into reading rooms and anganwadis. The idea is to offset sparse activity on the 60-km stretch — due to minimal train services on the line — by finding ways to engage and empower local communities.
Silk activity
Meera Iyer, convenor of INTACH’s Bengaluru chapter, said the proposal for a silk resource centre at the Avathihalli station could throw the limelight on the region’s largely under-reported home-based sericulture activity.
“It operates like a decentralised cottage industry, covering it all — from a cocoon to the finished product. The project could give the industry a human face,” she told DH.
A major part of the consolidation work in the Doddajala and Devanahalli stations was done on the roofs. INTACH has also factored in other possibilities — a verandah at the Devanahalli station was restructured to accommodate a small stage for performances.
Work at the Nandi Halt station will be taken up in the final leg of the first phase. SWR is planning a railway museum and a park at the station at a cost of Rs 2.35 crore. Tenders inviting partners will be floated soon.
The railway division has also requested institutions, NGOs and retired railway employees to share images, audio and video recordings, journals, sketches, stamps and newspaper clippings relevant to the history of the railways for display at the proposed museum and galleries.

The new zone with headquarters at Vizag was formed in February, 2019 but not yet commissioned
BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao submitting a memorandum to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi
Visakhapatnam: The dream project of Andhra Pradesh, the formation of South Coast Railway (SCoR) will be made operational in two months with positive response from the Central government, BJP MP and national spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao said on Sunday.
The

new zone will have a length of 3,496 km with 1,106 route km. At present, Waltair division is part of East Coast Railway Zone (ECoR) with headquarters at Bhubaneswar. Before ECoR, the areas were part of South Eastern Railway with headquarters in Kolkata.
After meeting Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, he told Bizz Buzz in an interview that both land and finance had been made available to operationalise the new zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam. This was one of the main demands at the time of bifurcation in 2014. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the eve of general elections had announced here that a new zone will be formed in deference to the growing public demand in February, 2019.
Rao said they are trying to invite the Prime Minister to lay the foundation stone for the SCoR zonal headquarters office complex when he is likely to visit the City of Destiny in connection with the commissioning of the 15 million tonne expansion project of HPCL Visakh Refinery.
The refinery has been expanded from 8.33 million tonnes at a cost of Rs 22,000 crore. There are also efforts include the launching of modernisation of Visakhapatnam Railway Station at a cost of over Rs 900 crore and other mega projects.
The government has also approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR). Delay in making the zone operational has caused anguish among the zone protagonists leading to issuing of a threat to revive railway zone by several activists of Visakhapatnam Railway Zone Sadhana Porata Samiti.
Now it has been proposed to make the zonal office into a smart office by using the latest technologies like Internet of Things (IoT). The new zone will consist of Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions and the proposed Rayagada divisions. One of the main bones of contention was the proposal to wind up the profit-making Waltair division and merge parts of it in Vijayawada and Rayagada divisions.
The DPR moots construction of zonal office in an area of 20 acres and the conversion of Divisional Railway Manager's office into zonal office as an ad hoc arrangement till the permanent buildings are ready. Allotment of additional posts, air conditioning and furnishing the existing office will cost around Rs 5 crore.
Another building has been suggested near the office for training purposes. Unused land measuring 40 acres at Wireless Colony and 52.22 acres allotted to railways at Mudasarlova, according to the DPR, can be used for various zonal offices and quarters.
The DPR has recommended 170 gazetted officers and 1200 non-gazetted staff for SCoR of which 90 from South Central Railway and 40 from ECoR will be absorbed in the new zone.

Along with SCoR formation, GTL WADI should be transferred to SCR or New Kalaburagi division should also get formed. Else GTL WADI stretch will get neglected. There will be no motivation by SCoR to develop these backward areas.
Anyway GTL is having 1200 kms route kms and realignment will not make any impact or loss.

Linking Bettahalasoor (on Chikkaballapur line) to Rajanukunte (on DMM line) is a welcome move.
DMM line and Tumkur line need to be linked. Two options:
1. Rajanukunte can be linked with Tumkur line at Byranayakanahalli or Doddabele, by a 25 km line.
2. From Muddalinganahalli on Dabaspet Doddaballapura road, a line can be laid almost parallel to Road. 30 kms
