The incident occurred when a herd of 23 elephants was crossing the railway line near Bundamunda A Cabin on the Howrah-Mumbai main route. A goods train was standing on the other track, and when the N Box goods train came from the up main line, the elephants panicked and ran. The eight-month-old calf was hit by the train, resulting in its death. Two other elephants, including a calf, were injured.
On Tuesday morning, forest department officials, including DFO Yashwant Sethi, reached the scene of the accident. The carcass was buried after a post-mortem examination. The train's assistant driver, Kavi Raj Mahto, was taken into custody for questioning about the train's speed and the incident. However, he was released around 3:30 PM after questioning. The N Box goods train was being operated by driver Manoj Kumar and assistant driver Kavi Raj Mahto. The news of the assistant driver's detention led to protests by the crew at the Bundamunda Crew Lobby, where they staged a sit-in demonstration.
