Cuddalore: The Panruti Police in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu arrested three persons, including the son of former bank employees, for running a duplicate branch of the State Bank of India in the locality. The three men, S Kamal Babu (19), A Kumar (42) and M Manickam (52) have been arrested under charges of forgery and making or possessing counterfeit seal among other sections of IPC.

According to Cuddalore Superintendent of Police, the "mock" branch has been running for three months and no customer was cheated. "Nobody has been cheated or no money was deposited in the branch. Hence we have not invoked sections of cheating. Kamal Babu has just been maintaining attendance registers, putting signatures and doing office duty by himself. It is not a network or anything," the officer said.
The fake branch came under the scanner of the police after Kamal Babu's relative raised suspicion. According to the police, Kamal Babu took the credentials of his aunt's account and was operating it by opening Recurring Deposits and Fixed Deposits etc. When she noted the discrepancy in her account, she took the payslips to Axis Bank branch, where she has another account, to check if it was valid. The payslip read "SBI Panruti North" and the Axis Bank manager intimated the SBI officials about this as SBI did not have a branch in Panruti North.
Following this, the SBI branch officials lodged a complaint with the police and when the police team raided the place, they recovered fake withdrawal challans, payslips and other fake bank-related forms. The three men were produced before a local court and remanded to custody.
