Meter Gauge Chronicles. A journey in one of the last remaining mainline MG routes.

1. BRK-MLN MG Express being shunted on PF-1 of Bahraich. Meanwhile GD-BRK DEMU in background in background preparing for it's return journey.

2.
...
Machine, man and nature. Our train departing from the laidback settings of Manjhara Poorab.

3. Daily life and the daily commuters of the train. Most of the travellers boarded to reach their daily jobs in Risiya. Teachers, shopkeepers, nurses, policeman, peons, everyone on the train seemed to know each other.

4. A curious child looking out of the window. He kept asking his father about everything he saw. That's how I became a railfan, too.

5. Lines meeting and going deep into the Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary.

6, 7. Traversing through the Dudhwa national park.

8. Approaching the mighty Ghaghra barrage. It was quite scary sitting on the gate and recording while the river churned below.

9. A semaphore signal and a railway employee returning after setting the signal to Stop.

10. That one's obvious. The little devil snatched my samosa and hid below the train.

11. Our pairing train going back to Bahraich, running back into the Katarniaghat sanctuary after emerging from Dudhwa.

12. A busy Nanpara Junction bustling with activity. Train halted here for almost an hour. You can go out and buy things to eat. Or you can buy bread-pakoras or samosas being freshly made on the PF. The huge old tree gives the feels of old times and may remind you of Malgudi Days.

13. The said bread-pakora. Along with the samosa it was quite delicious, although a bit oily to my liking.

14. A IZN YDM-4 stands tall at it's base, Mailani.

15. The MG yard of Mailani. You can spot a wide variety of YDM-4s, GS and Vistadome tourist coaches here. Along with a few freight vans and brake vans.

16. Located a few meters away from the station, beyond the yard is the loco maintenance shed of Mailani, most probably managed by IZN.

17. Mailani yard with all the MG coaches and locos with the coaching depot visible in the background.

18. Where MG meets electrified BG. BRK-MLN MG Express on PF-3 while my next connecting train MLN-GKP Express standing on PF-1.

I did this journey on 31/06/2022. And except LKO-GD, the entire LKO-MLN-LJN journey was on a station bought general ticket. The train was clean, washrooms were clean and were fully functional. Although same can't be said for the electrical elements.

I was also quite surprised that people boarding the train from the stations mid-jungle, too traveled with valid tickets. They were helpful and interacting with them, learning about their slow lives in remote areas was an experience in itself.

Kumud.

Useful:Thank you for the information ЁЯШК Useful
Earlier, the Gonda-05371-05355-Mailani-15010-Lucknow used to be the most effective chain, with all the trains in sync and wait times less than half an hour.

Now, with the gauge conversion, it's quite hectic. You should either reach Gonda, take a UP Roadways or auto to Nanpara, and then continue further using the same chain.

Or,
...

reach Mailani by some early morning train, take the train to Nanpara, deboard there, take a UP roadways or auto to Bahraich. Take the evening DEMU to Gonda and carry on further.

Or, just take the Tourist special to Bichhia, do a round trip back to Mailani, and take the 15010 to LJN. But this won't take you through the whole route and will be full of unmannered 'tourists'.

Please keep in mind that the journey is slow, and after the initial excitement wears off, it gets boring after the jungle ends if you're traveling solo. There is no network in the national park areas. And except for Nanpara I couldn't find anything to eat.

Interesting images. Due to Dudhwa national park restrictions, IR isn't gonna convert this track into BG, right?

Thankyou :)

No, they won't convert it. It'd be preserved as a heritage route from Mailani to Nanpara. There would probably be a new BG alignment bypassing both the wildlife sanctuaries, from Nanpara to Mailani.

Can someone please explain why there is an eletric trip shed of NCR at NDLS along with NR?

Also, wouldn't it be better to wall off tracks around Dayabasti and Wazirpur-Azadpur slums, than to keep a PSR and face constant threat of breach on tracks?

I think the location Dayabasti and accompanying station of the same name is notorious for this. The Google Maps reviews are filled with people asking folks not to go there after dusk. I once boarded a passenger from there[during day, of course] and had a chance to see the station and it was the dirtiest thing I have seen till now. Atleast 4 cows/bulls at station entrance and then a giant garbage dump b/w PF #2 and #3.

Slums are notorious for this. Be it Delhi or Bombay or a tier-3 city. Poverty crossed with arrogance and poor upbringing by already overworked parents, it leads to delinquent offspring.

The biggest culprits are the political parties, who, instead of uplifting them, keep them extremely poor and promote this, just for votebank. Also, the 'influencers', who go there to milk views and justify the life on tracks. As sensational it may seem, I don't think many of them are Indian nationals.
...

They could've walled it off, like Bombay, but seems like either politics is too strong for that, or IR is lazy as always to do that. The slums will only show how 'developed' we're while looking out of a Vande Bharat EC.

People love to go to weird places. I once was going from old Delhi station towards Jama Masjid side[close to where the old shops are for eating :p]. That area, if anyone has been there, is exceptionally dense. Sometimes it feels that the population density will choke you down.

And what do I see in those narrow lanes? White folks touring. Delhi has many historic places, museums and conventional locations to tour. But near so called 'Chor Bazaar'? That is one of the worst experiences one can have. I myself heavily

White folks or foreigners in general love to go to places we won't even set foot in, and then cry about unfair practices and 'racism'. They expect warm welcomes everywhere, as if we're here only to do bidding for our old 'masters'.

I saw a foreigners blog, and he was saying, 'India is racist to black people'. No one was ever disrespectful to him, they just didn't bow down to welcome him, and roaming on unknown bylanes, he was accompanied by some anti-social fellows, and hence the title.
...

Leave foreigners, we Indians aren't much behind them in doing idiotic things for reels and reach. If you search for Varanasi, half of the reels will show burning bodies at crematoriums. Banaras is much more than that, but hey, we see only crematoriums, and we are shamefully disrespectful enough to picture someone's last rites and their grieving family members.
