The Kumbh Mela, which lasts for a month and a half, attracts a large number of devotees, many of whom travel through Indore on their way to Ujjain. An estimated 80,000 devotees are expected to visit Indore during the festival. The metro service is being planned to alleviate traffic congestion during this period. Member of Parliament Shankar Lalwani confirmed that a 4km trial run of the metro was conducted last year.
