But as per /blog/post/4056022 all are small towns. Osmanabad is a district HQ whose population is much higher than these towns

Yup osmanabad is District HQ with around 1.2lakh population but this route total population to serve 3 taluks come around 95k so its bit useful too compared to single osmanabad city on that stretch. And also population flow is bit good as i have travelled in bus from harapanahalli to gadag and also land is fertile one due to Tungabhadra river proximity where lot of raw materials can be transported to major places from this here with serving public too..

Barshi NG light railway route was under project uni-gauge BG conversion and requirement to connect to UMD district was there because to give halt for all trains exp/sf/pass etc to district HQ, On the other side they are still not able get Solapur-Tuljapur-Umd new line. But here on SWR case, railways already done with Hosapete-Kotturu-Harihar route and on other side of the river they sanctioned Gadag-Yalvigi route. Harappanahalli line will also be short if sanctioned, the fact is even though it will get sanction, it will take more than a decade with last priority in this region to complete.

The NG alignment would have required a much longer tunnel and the tunneling would be even more difficult as it goes through the heart of the hills. The new BG route skirts around the periphery of the main hilly area and has long straight stretches.
Its just that in this case, the realignment was not purely due to political appeals. IR itself too had benefits from rerouting the track.
Most importantly, there was no clearance to lay the BG track through the sanctuary. The same thing is happening now with the

MG line between Bahraich and Mailani, which is not being converted as it passes through the Dudhwa National park.
But yes, typically IR avoids constructing long bridges whenever possible and prefers longer alignments wherever necessary.
