----------------------------- -- Pantograph Used in IR Locomotives ----- ------------------
This Blog is telling all the Details of Pantographs used in Indian Railway Locomotives.

Stone India is the pioneer in introducing Pantographs

for Indian Railways in 1970s and large number of Freight and Passenger Electric Locomotives of Indian Railways are equipped with Stone India Pantographs. The high speed Passenger Electric Locomotives as per ABB design introduced in 1980s by Indian Railways are mounted with AM-92 Pantographs of Stone India make. Pantographs used in the Rolling Stock for collecting current from the Overhead Equipment are manufactured as per Faiveley/France design in various models of AM-12, for Freight and Passenger Locomotive application, AM-92 for High Speed Electric Loco application and AM-18B1 for DC traction and AM-18B2 for dual voltage application (AC/DC traction). The Pantographs manufactured are robust and sturdy design.

Now from the above Discussion of Stone India The following can be ascertained:
WAP-7 & WAG-9 is fitted with AM-92 Pantograph
Conventional Loco are equipped with AM-12 Pantograph
WCAM Series are equipped with either AM-18B1 or AM-18B2
Now what is the Pantograph of WAP-5 ?
Ans: WAP-5 use a Seperate Pantograph altogether which is named as WBL-85 Single Arm Pantograph. This Pantograph has very less failure rate than AM-92 used in WAP-7 & WAG-9.
Why?
As because, AM-92 is a Spring Operated Pantograph whereas High Speed WBL-85 is and Air Operated Pantograph(Re# 1551874-47)
For more details of WBL-85 High Speed Pantograph of WAP-5 please refer the following PDF Link: click here (It's a 56 Page PDF Document about WBL-85 High Speed Pantograph)
Recently we have a AM-92 Pantograph Issue with LGD WAP-7 near Dasnagar hauling 12859 Geetanjali Exp.(Blog Entry#1551874) If WBL-85 Pantograph are used in WAP-7 like WAP-5 then I think Pantograph Failure can be avoided to a Large Extent.
The 56 Page PDF Document about WBL-85 High Speed Pantograph is attached with this blog for Ready Reference.
You can find video of WAP-5 with WBL-85 pantograph if you search in Google.

AM92 is not a totally spring operated pantograph. It is a mix of air and spring operation. (all pantographs are either air+spring or electrical system + spring or fully air operated). Spring based pantos are good until ~160kmph beyond which they cannot handle rapid variations due to the relatively high response time of the springs. However, during normal operations, these are perfectly reliable and even around the world, for sub-100mph uses, spring based pantos are used. While the air-based pantos are more robust, in typical conditions, failure rate is practically the same.
The principle behind the pantograph operation is simple enough and when used within the design limits, failures are mainly due to specific equipment failure or

poor maintenance rather than the type of pantograph used. Spring based Pantos are also quite robust and when used at the speeds normally seen in IR, they are perfectly reliable. The Geetanjali express case could be the result of an equipment failure ( Compressor used to raise the panto, or a breakage in the plunger or the longitudinal tube) and does not reflect on the performance of spring based pantos.

Here is a document with good details about the operating principles and maintenance of the AM12 Pantos generally seen on WAG5/WAG7 locos and many EMUs. (AM92 probably uses a slightly similar design)

Also another circular regarding analysis of Pantograph and OHE entanglement which highlighted equipment failure on the Pantos as the chief reason for entanglement.

These days, every other day, we are getting requests from members to allow email login to their FB-based IRI account. 10 years ago, we had given the option for users to login through FaceBook - in retrospect, this was a mistake. These days, apparently, users are quitting FaceBook in droves because...
