About This Tamping machine :
The Plasser Tamping Machine or Tie Tamping Machine is used to maintain the track and its ballast. Due to the passage of the traffic over the track, the ballast below the sleepers is crushed which causes the track to lose its ideal characteristics such as flexibility. Hence first ballast is dropped on the track and this machine comes up behind.The tamping process is carried out by first clamping itself to the rails by means of hydraulic hooks and then the rail and sleepers are lifted slightly. After this a set of four tamping tools (two on each side of a sleeper) are forcefully inserted and pressed together which restores fresh ballast below the sleeper.This also results in lifting the track level slightly. Other machines are also available for other works such as Dynamic Track Stabilizer, Ballast Cleaning Machine etc.
