You can go through chennai local service. In adjacent of Chennai Central Station (Use of Pedestrian Flyover Towards Right Side Of MAS Exit) you can find chennai park (MPK) station and there you find local train goes towards tambaram alight you at chennai egmore (Next Stop) @ 10/-.
And, you can also go through Chennai Metro from central station to egmore station next stop @ 10/-

Never take an auto. Book a cab if you're not comfortable with public transport. I repeat for the sake of your hard earned money. NEVER take an auto.

Their demand starts from 100's and goes on multiplying for outsiders
More dreadful than them overcharging you is them tricking you. If you know Tamil, it'd be all fine (even the legal charges are pretty high though). But yes, in outsiders they see goldmines. And in all probability they'd go for mining the mine.
Actually share auto would be a better option. Used to take a share auto every time I went to Virugambakkam. I am not sure if they cover different places with ease, but if you were to get one, then nothing like it.
I travelled in Chennai only by local trains, MTC buses, metro trains and share autos (very rare). I didn't hire a regular auto. I follow same policy for other big cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai etc., keeping transportation cost in mind
Not in all south Indian cities, never faced any problem in Hyderabad or Bangalore.
We also experienced the same in 2014. Having deboarded by 50 min late running nzm mas duronto, our rmm express departing at 2135 from egmore was sure shot going to be missed. But noticing the luggage, ladies pax and seeming unawareness about chennai, he promised that he will get us catch the train, we reached egmore in 20 minutes missing the train but he charged whopping 400 rs for the same. After that, sensing this loot we searched another auto to go to koyambedu in just 250rs

I was also looted in chennei. From MS to MAS they charged 400 .
