Presently only about handful of rakes are available both with CR and WR. Although MRVC has placed a bulk order for AC EMU rakes, they are expected to arrive only from second half of 2023. Otherwise the rate of arrival of an AC EMU rake to Mumbai has been like one in about 4-6 months.

Railways planned to operate only AC EMUs on Mumbai suburban, eventually at Metro rates (something like DMRC). Think about the present rolling stock of non-A/c EMUs. They are good for at least 20 years more. They may

utilize DC-AC converted non-A/c rakes to increase services on TNA-KYN section, since they are good for at least another 15 years. Also, presently not in use AC rakes of BHEL/Alstom may be put in service.

There is no point in bringing AC fares down to Metro fares just now. But as an indicator towards that, they can at least halve the fares till there is a suitable time to implement Metro fares. Mind well, AC rakes have hard seats (like Metro) -- without cushions like in FC.

Fares of AC locals should atleast be at par with the current Non-AC first class fares. Passengers paying a hefty fare for First class don't actually get any perks apart from cushioned seats and tinted windows. During peak hours, the FC coaches are as crowded as the second class ones and very few people actually get to sit on those *cushioned* seats.
So, reducing AC fares and making it at part with FC fares will benefit a lot of FC passengers. Further, many passengers currently travelling in Second class may migrate to AC since by paying some extra amount, they are actually getting a tangible advantage/benefit over the regular Second class which they weren't getting by migrating to FC.

After paying at least 4 times, the only advantage FC travelers get is cushioned seats, and only if they travel in non-peak hours.

Majority of the travelers buy MST just for the reason that they avoid queues for tickets, only 15 journeys per month fare and the fastest mode of travel. AC travel at present is costlier than FC, very much discouraging. OK, if there is no AC MST, but allow travel at half the FC cost on non cushioned AC seats! That should allow more expectations on reduced AC fares and
