Crossing the Mighty Brahmaputra on the Naranarayan Setu - 13247 Capital Exp. (March 1, 2013) : A major magic moment of the journey! Fifteen minutes after departing from Goalpara Town, we went over the Brahmaputra river on the Naranarayan Setu bridge. The train was on the bridge for a good three minutes. I was rather surprised to see islands in the middle of the river. Signs of a drought, perhaps? FYI, the 2.28 km long bridge is the third one across the Brahmaputra and was inaugurated on April 15, 1998.

-----------AN INTERESTING YUVA JOURNEY---------
.
‘Yuva Express’ as we call it, had been one innovative, but an unsuccessful experiment of the Indian Railways. Such was the magnitude of the failure that there could be no more, and the two introduced initially are only kept alive by the heavy rush on their respective routes. There are plenty more reasons, and have been discussed umpteen times. So I would rather get to my report than trying to repeat things no one is interested in.

My brother was supposed to appear in an entrance exam on 8th June and the plans were to return on the same day. This train, as always, served as a valuable last option for us. After encountering a scorching summer day, we arrived NZM pretty early as we had nothing else do. My brother blamed it on my new found habit of ‘collecting’ pictures of trains, but little did he knew that the heat had left me as much interested in Rail Fanning as him. We had a nice lunch at Comesum and made our way to platform 7 where Goa Express stood with pride. Soon, she glided away on her scheduled time, revealing an array of WAPs which would drop the jaws of any railfan. My only RF activity of the day was hence catalysed and I again withdrew myself to the bench.
.
Around 3:20 a BRC WAP-4E 22209 quietly pulled in with the rake and all my hopes of it getting a white beast that day were dashed. Small space overhead for keeping luggage in the train only meant that there was going to be a stiff competition between those travelling with big bags to get in the train quickly and ensure that their baggage was in place. We moved inside swiftly by the virtue of our small backpacks and sat on our seats peacefully. Amidst all the chaos, two loud voices, one of a male and other of a female, were heard exchanging abuses. A little inquiry from other passengers enlightened us about it. The girl had slapped the boy believing him to be a serial eve-teaser. The haste to board the train probably gave birth to this misunderstanding. However, their prudence got better of them as they decided to abandon the issue. But there were more shocking things to follow.

PART 2-
.
Peace ensued after all the boarding chaos as people settled into their seats and ‘BRACED THEMSELVES’ for a painful journey which was to follow. But some faces were still anxious and eyes were continuously scanning the crowd. The person seated near me was no exception. A careful observation gave me the #first revelation of the journey. All of them were touts and were waiting for their customers (who were soon to become our co-passengers) to arrive. The one seated near me finally handed a ticket, and a voter’s ID

(most probably a fake one) to an old man, aged around 60 and assured him that nothing would happen. He went away saying ‘Sab baat pehle hi ho chuki hai’. I had known that this train is one of the favorites among touts and what happened in front of my eyes only strengthened this belief.
.
The train departed from NZM bang on time and started skipping stations, some of which are the temples of high speed action lovers, in its usual manner. And it has to maintain such an aggressive schedule to avoid becoming the victim of the King’s wrath, which starts following it soon. I drifted into a short nap after making a few updates in my trip diary, which broke only when it came to a halt at Mathura Jn. The next thing which drew my attention was an unusual commotion which I had never seen in this train before. Despite all the seats being full, there were still some passengers in the aisle and near the toilets. It was, a hard to believe, but the #second revelation of the journey. There were waitlisted passengers in a chair car. This may not be the first case and many of you may have observed it before. For me, it was a shocker. This practice was initially prevalent in SL and 2S. But it seems the disease is now spreading to other classes as well. PKV Sir, a month earlier, had told me about the troubles he had to face because of these unauthorized entries, when he was on his way to Delhi in Howrah Rajdhani. I feel the day isn’t far when people would be gracing the floors of a Shatabdi.
.
Next two are not exactly revelations, but some gross negligences on the part of the railway staff, which proved more inconvenient to the passengers than the above two. Would conclude my report by highlighting them.
.
