A first-of-its-kind mobile museum title ‘Living histories of land in Goa’ is set to tour the state. On display will be original flyers and posters used during the earliest environmental struggles in Goa.
From a handout titled ‘Do not destroy Goa divert Konkan Railway’ asking people to attend a public meeting at Lohia Maidan on August 19, 1991 to one threatening an indefinite fisheries bandh on November 23, 1994 to protest deep sea foreign fishing vessels are among the archival material that will be exhibited. Documentary footage, testimonials and a theatrical performance with live music will also provide a historical overview of the social movement struggles, right from the protest the ‘master plan’ for tourism in the late 1980s which resulted in
several arrests to DuPont’s Nylon 6,6 struggle in Keri where one protestor was shot dead.
“The idea behind this initiative is to provoke a sort of reflection on living history because this is something you don’t find in textbooks or anywhere else. It’s more of a constructive and reflective exercise to appreciate the history of the social movement struggle,” says Preeti Sampat an anthropologist and assistant professor at Ambedkar University in Delhi who initiated the idea for the living histories mobile museum.
Sampat has completed her doctoral dissertation at the City University of New York on the special economic zones law in India and the failure in implementation in Goa due to popular resistance. She then received a small grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropology, USA, to take the findings of her study back to the people.
“When putting together my doctoral dissertation I realized that Goa has a rich history of struggles. It was the only state in the country that managed to get the government to cancel and revoke all SEZs. Environmental consciousness is very strong in the state and this is something that doesn’t happen overnight,” she says. The living histories mobile museum has tried to look at struggles related with the fight against capitalist development, where wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of a few at great public cost.
An online museum,,is also being set up.
The mobile museum will travel to Lohia Maidan, Margao, Ponda, Panaji, Keri and Verna between May 21 and 25. It is open and free for all.
